What Is Liposuction?
Stubborn fat deposits can linger despite your best efforts with diet and exercise, making it challenging to achieve the toned silhouette you desire. Liposuction offers a solution by targeting and removing unwanted fat from specific areas of your body. At John L. Clayton, MD at Southridge Clinic Plastic Surgery, we provide personalized liposuction treatments focusing on areas, like the arms, chin, stomach, neck, and thighs. Dr. John L. Clayton tailors each procedure to your unique goals, helping you refine your contours and boost your confidence. If you're considering liposuction, our team in Riverton, UT is here to support you on your journey.
How Do You Perform Liposuction?
For your comfort and safety, Dr. Clayton performs liposuction using general anesthesia. He starts by making small, discreet incisions near the targeted areas. A thin tube called a cannula is inserted through these incisions to gently loosen and remove excess fat cells. Once he's finished, Dr. Clayton will close the incisions and bandage them before moving you to a recovery room for monitoring. Whether you're focusing on your stomach, thighs, arms, neck, or chin, Dr. Clayton customizes the liposuction technique to suit your individual needs, sculpting the area for a smoother, more proportionate look.
Recovery after liposuction varies, depending on the extent of the procedure and the areas treated. You may experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications. Dr. Clayton will provide detailed aftercare instructions to support your healing process and help you achieve the best possible results.
What Should I Expect after Liposuction?
Recovery after liposuction typically takes about 1 – 3 weeks, depending on how many areas were treated and the size of those treatment zones. Swelling and bruising are common during the first couple of weeks, and any stitches can usually be removed within 7 – 10 days. The most important part of recovery is giving your body the time it needs to heal. Once you're ready to return to work, it's important to take things slowly and not overdo it. Our team may recommend light activities, such as walking or gentle exercise, to help you gradually regain your strength. While you might start to see changes shortly after surgery, it usually takes about 6 – 10 months to fully see your new body shape and contour.
What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?
Liposuction can be an effective solution for reducing stubborn fat in specific areas of your body. It's ideal for individuals who have tried diet and exercise but still struggle with isolated fat pockets. The benefits of liposuction at our Riverton, UT practice include:

Liposuction Reviews
I have had two surgeries with Dr. Clayton. The first being a breast reduction. And I am just weeks out of a panniclectomy, a tummy tuck and liposuction. He is not only professional and personable and does a great job. I have been both happy with and have loved my results. He is both friendly and personable as is his staff. I highly recommend him and his staff.
I had an amazing experience! - Draper, UT - I absolutely loved the work Dr. Clayton performed on me. After having 5 kids my body was ready to get back to pre pregnancy look. I haven't been this happy with myself in 17 years before my first baby. I was so nervous for the surgery and how I would function afterwards. He took the time to reassure me that I would do great and I was a healthy candidate for the procedure, but also was real on the recovery of it. He didn't mask any of the pain I would feel. Everything was spot on with how I would feel at so many post days/weeks of healing. He was real informative after the surgery with the many questions I had the first few weeks. I would highly recommend him for a mommy makeover. I had breast augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction in my flanks and stomach area. I had hardly any bruising because of the binder he put me in (not all physicians have you wear a binder) the binder is uncomfortable but so worth it for bruising and swelling purposes. The breast aug was pretty much painless and very clean cut. I am so happy with the results! The tummy tuck scar is amazing! As I looked at YouTube and other internet sites at peoples scars, I was prepared to look like Frankenstein afterwards. Not at all! The scar looks so great! And the stitches were sewn so nicely which makes all the difference in the final result of the scar. The scar is low enough I can wear a bikini and look like I'm 20 again! I will refer everyone I know to him!
Breast reduction, small implant & lipo on chin, back, stomach & fat transfer - I chose Dr Clayton because of his amazing bedside manner and before and after photos. Getting a breast reduction has always been a plan but life and breastfeeding push it out. While I was waiting, I did go to Mexico and have a tummy tuck (you can find those results on my profile). Even though Dr. Clayton was my first choice, I couldn't resist the pricing and insanely good results I was seeing. Unfortunately, it proved to be a mistake as I had a very large scar opening that I had to have taken care of her. That's how I originally found Dr. Clayton. He spent weeks healing me up and closing me open wound. He was absolutely incredible and I knew then that I wouldn't have done surgery with anyone else. Skip to March - I ended up with a very strange shape because of the way that the tummy tuck was done in Mexico. I had lost all of my curves. I was sure that I wanted to move forward with the breast reduction and augmentation through Dr. Clayton. But I grappled back-and-forth if I should also add all the liposuction to fix the fat pockets and give me back my curves. I research a couple other alternatives that are claiming to be a lot more aggressive to get your results, most notably MIA Aesthtics with Dr Van Borem. Dr. Clayton assured me that he is extremely aggressive and could give me the results I want.Dr. Clayton's nurse Quinn goes above and beyond and really makes you feel so welcomed while you are in the lobby, quotes and check ups. This was another reason I choose him over MIA. As I found them much more sales oriented and hard to contact. Dr. Clayton literally gave me his personal phone number to text with any issues! How could you not feel important? As of 4/8 I went into surgery doing a breast reduction with a small implant; Lipo on my chin, all of my back and all of my stomach and fat transfer to my butt. The results are still in the making but I'll continue to update with pictures as I progesss

Am I A Candidate for Liposuction?
Fat removal surgery is often a good solution for people who are at or close to their ideal weight but still have areas of fat that won't go away with diet and exercise alone. To achieve the best outcome, patients should have firm, elastic skin since liposuction does not tighten loose or sagging skin. It's also important to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss method. Women who are thinking about this procedure should ideally be done having children, as pregnancy can impact long-term results. During your consultation, our team will discuss your goals and help you understand what to expect from treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does liposuction cost?
The cost of liposuction depends on the technique used and the number of areas being treated. During your consultation, our team will create a personalized treatment plan based on your aesthetic goals, preferences, and budget. Once your plan is finalized, we'll provide a detailed cost estimate. To make your procedure more accessible, Southridge Clinic Plastic Surgery accepts various payment methods and offers assistance with low-interest financing options.
Will I have scars?
Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, small incisions will be made and closed with sutures, which can leave scars. However, we take great care to place these incisions in discreet locations or natural body folds to minimize visibility. After your surgery, our team will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions to support smooth healing and help your scars fade over time.
Will my results last?
Maintaining your results after liposuction depends on your long-term lifestyle habits. While the procedure permanently removes fat cells, future weight gain can still affect your shape. We recommend being close to your ideal weight before surgery and maintaining that weight afterward. Staying within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgery weight is ideal. If you become pregnant later on, we can discuss additional procedures like a mommy makeover to help restore your results.
